Oldest Wooden Bridge

The Chapel Bridge is a famous wooden bridge located in Lucerne, Switzerland. It is also known as Kapellbrücke in German.

The Chapel Bridge is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. It was built in the 1300s and has been standing for almost 700 years, which is really impressive.

Originally, it was part of the city’s defenses to keep invaders out, and today it’s one of Switzerland’s most famous landmarks.

Over the centuries, it has witnessed numerous historical events, surviving wars, and natural disasters, and evolved into a cherished landmark that embodies the spirit of Lucerne.

Walking across it, you can absolutely feel the history.

Design And Architectural Features

700 years back in the day, the bridge length was 270 meters. Nowadays, it’s only just over 200 Meters.

Its covered design not only adds charm to the whole structure but also protects the wooden structure from the elements.

Now, the roof structure is supported by a series of wooden beams and trusses. This design was practical for the bridge’s original purpose, which was defense.

Its most special feature is the series of 17th-century triangular paintings that adorn the rooftop of the bridge.

Each painting tells a story, providing a glimpse into Lucerne’s past.

The 1993 Fire

When you walk on the bridge, one of the things you will obviously notice is that some portions of the bridge are burned.

In 1993, a fire destroyed a large part of the Chapel Bridge. As I mentioned earlier about the paintings, some of them were also lost in the fire.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Lucerne and even for Switzerland.

However, the bridge was fully restored to its former glory in just eight months, but some of the beautiful paintings were lost forever.

Which is really sad!

Water Tower (Wasserturm)

The main attraction of the Chapel Bridge is the water tower (Wasserturm). The Wasserturm, as the Swiss call it in Swiss-German, is a tower that’s actually older than the bridge itself.

Over the years, it has served as a prison, even a torture chamber, or a bit more bright, a treasury.

The tower and the bridge together make a great photo spot, and I think the combination of these two makes it as popular as it is today.

How do I get inside the water tower? And the thing is, it’s not really possible to go inside the tower. But the closest way you can get to the water tower is from the bridge. 

Also, there is not much to look at inside. It’s a room where you can have meetings and dinner if you privately booked it.
