The charm of Morcote

The Charm Of Morcote

Morcote is located in the canton of Ticino and situated on the shores of Lake Lugano. The promenade by the lake is really beautiful at first impression.

The village is very serene and also very vivid, looking like a really beautiful mix of colors.

The village charms with its many houses and cafes as well as with its surrounding panorama of Lake Lugano and the mountain behind the lake.

Although some people may think that Morcote is all about the promenade, I can assure you there’s a lot more to discover in Morcote.

Morcote's narrow alley

Once you enter the village’s narrow alleys you will feel like being in a village somewhere around Lake Como in northern Italy.

As Morcote is built on a hill, some of you may guess there are a lot of amazing lookouts. It’s quite a way up there. However, the higher you reach, the more impressive the view you get.

The effort you give to reach up on the hill definitely is very much worth it because the view up there is just phenomenal.

What is really great about the lookouts and more caught the hill is that from every spot you will get a different impression that is stunning altogether.

After that, I suggest you go down and pay a visit to the church. From the church’s lookout point, you can enjoy the amazing view of Lake Lugona.

Church of Santa Maria del Sasso

Church of Santa Maria del Sasso

The Church of Santa Maria del Sasso itself is very beautiful. It is one of the important pilgrimage places for Catholics in Ticino.

The church is not to be confused with the more famous Madonna del Sasso, which is standing in Locarno.

Bell tower

As you enter the church, the first thing that catches your eye is its striking bell tower.

The interior is very beautiful. It’s built in Renaissance and Baroque styles, and you can see a lot of frescoes.

Because of its beauty and unique location on the hill, the church is considered one of the top places to visit in Morcote.

Cimitero monumentale di morocote

Cimitero Monumentale di Morcote

Before you go down to the village, I suggest you go to the nearby Cimitero Monumentale di Morcote (Monumental Cemetery of Morcote).

Cimitero Monumentale di Morcote was built in the 18th century and served as the final resting place for many of the village’s notable residents.

It’s impressive that it’s considered a cultural heritage site that is under protection.

When you walk around its pathways, you’re treading on ground that has witnessed centuries of local history.

Parco Scherrer

Parco Scherrer

One of the very top attractions to visit in Morcote is the Parco Scherrer. It’s a botanical garden where you’ll be taken to different parts of the world.

You’re not only going to see plenty of different plants but also a lot of relics from various cultures.

This botanical garden not only provides you with a lot of surprises, but you’re also getting fantastic views, and all in all, it’s just very serene here.

There is only one thing I can say about this place and that is that it’s very beautiful. I just really love this garden.

You have so many different elements from all over the world, from Buddha to Chinese characters to Roman and Greek goddesses.

Scherrer house

Then you have the beautiful Scherrer house. It is an essential part of this enchanting garden.

The interior is richly decorated with sculptures, paintings, antiques, and other artworks collected by the founder Hermann Arthur Scherrer.

Dining Experiences

Dining Experiences

After being back to the village, it is time to explore the world of food and here I suggest you first go to La Casa del Gelato.

If you’re in Ticino, you definitely should have a gelato, especially in Morcote. On a sunny day, I think there’s no better way to enjoy this place.

There are a couple of great dining options that you should try out in Morcote.

Here are some of their name:

Ristorante della Torre (Cuisine: Italian, Mediterranean)

Ristorante Vicania (Cuisine: Italian, Mediterranean)

Osteria Portici (Cuisine: Ticinese, Italian)

Ristorante dells Posta (Cuisine: Italian, Mediterranean)

Grotto San Rocco (Cuisine: Swiss, Italian)

Zabaione

You should also try out Zabaione. It is a very common dessert in Italian and Swiss-Italian cuisine. It is very similar to “Teh Telur”.

But the main difference here is that Zabaione doesn’t contain duck egg; instead, the yolk is from chicken and it contains wine.

So, I definitely can say that this village is very alluring. Some people actually claim that this is the most beautiful village in Switzerland.

Well, I think this is probably true, and I’m totally amazed by this village. It is one of the must-visit destinations in Switzerland.

Next time you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, be sure to include Morcote on your bucket list.
